The problem is that it's a saturated field. Anyone who speaks fluent Japanese can be a translator, and I imagine that's not hard to come by in NZ. If he lived in the states, maybe it would be a different story. Maybe. Either way, majoring in any language is a bad idea, because there's nothing to fall back on. If you can't find a job translating, what then? What else does that qualify you to do? There are plenty of jobs that you can fall back on, such as teaching, social work, tour guide, curator, public relations. Personally my uncle got a really good job with AT&T for knowing Spanish, and you can't say that isn't a common language in America I believe he works with public relations or something; does a lot of traveling to say the least. It's probably good stand alone, but with another major I'm sure it looks rather good. I.E. Major in Journalism and Foreign language $$.

But, did your uncle major in Spanish?
That's the point here; a language major, on its own, is not too useful. Fluency in the language is much more important than the degree for most things you would apply it to on its own, such as translation, customer service, etc. And in order to do things like teaching, social work, etc., you would need a second set of credentials to prove your qualifications (Education major, for example). So why bother majoring in just the language?

comp sci/engi (no idea) and japanese as an interest, then. I'll probably have to go to university here too, because it's alot cheaper and there's less requirements than over in Japan.

Laugh all you want, Raven; RU will force you to choose a major in less than a month. End of 3rd Semester is when I have to choose by. It's the middle of my 2nd now. I'm gonna hold off as long as possible, methinks.

Funny, at this point (mid 2nd semester) I was still holding out, but I had to choose when they threatened to deregister me from all my classes. Maybe it's different for Rutgers College.
