I'm pretty sure that, after your first time visiting a new area, every subsequent time you make it to the new area the Tunnel Man will meet you in-between the stages. He'll charge a fee ($100k for level 5, $200k for level 9, and $300k for level 13) to make a short-cut to that level, and you can contribute whatever you earned in the preceding levels. These carry over, so if you pay $30k, the next time you make it to the new area the cost will be down to $70k.
Loot becomes more and more valuable in the later areas, so it's not necessarily much harder to earn $200k or $300k for the final one. The idol in area 1, for example, nets you 5k, I think, whereas in area 3 it's worth maybe 15k. Rubies and gems (maybe gold, I don't know for sure) are also more valuable, I believe.

Well that's good. I was afraid I would have to consult a FAQ, which brings a distasteful, bile-like taste to my tongue.
I must say I am quite addicted. I do wonder about the usefulness of some items though. For example, the high-jump shoes, climber's gloves, etc. seem nice, but ultimately I die more quickly when I have them because I incorrectly judge distances and whatnot and end up falling too far/hitting an enemy/spikes/whatever. Similarly, I'm not sure how useful a gun is if it can't be aimed and can't be switched out so you can carry damsels/statues/whatever. I'll prolly play some more tonight.

Juggling guns is an exercise in inventory management, but considering their power, it's totally worth it to try to hang on to them. Your best bet is to take any guns (or other items you want to hang on to, like the idol) and drop them down ahead of you when you're headed downward; the throw should hit any nearby enemies, and you'll be able to grab it once you head down yourself.

I feel like this is quite time-consuming. Should I be taking the levels way slower than I am? I usually charge through at maximum pace to avoid ghosts.

I mean, it's really up to you. Personally, I do my best to avoid that ghost, cause it's just asking for death. Juggling two or three items is pretty reasonable and viable, though, just so long as you don't go out of your way to explore everything and try to pick up every piece of loot in the level. Normally I'd encourage taking your time and exploring (safe) areas, but with multiple items like that, it's definitely best to just concentrate on getting to the exit.
Of course, there have certainly been times when I've ditched an item or an idol because I just knew it was going to get me killed.

Been a while (maybe a week?) since my last attempt at Spelunky. I started from level 1 and made it all the way to the final boss, but got pwned in the first 5 seconds. I only had one hit left, and I couldn't manage to get the Scepter since I was extremely low on bombs and ropes. Though in hindsight, I should've bought a bunch more in the numerous shops that I passed. >.<
Anyway, that was pretty reassuring. Back to writing that epic final exam paper.
