Thanks Niff...and yeah. I get that. I'd do the same thing with my wife. I'd spend time with her and play late friday and saturday nights after she went to sleep. She knows about it, its just so I'm not "ignoring her." Problem is...with the newborn, that time no longer exists. We're both up every couple hours taking care of diapers and feedings. If I went off to play, she'd get mad that I wasn't there helping take care of him. So until he can sleep through the night, I'm kinda screwed.

See, this is why I'm with a gamer...
We can spend free nights playing WoW, Soul Calibur, or whatever together, going to gaming groups, anime club, and playing RPGs together.

I didn't feel like posting this topic for the umpteenth time.
So, BUMP.
I guess this is really SOP by now, post a few times, forget to post here for a few years, rinse and repeat.
Read some of my posts from the past, I think it's a miracle I was never banned.
How is every one, anyway?
Post Script: Hell to the Yeah for abusing the enter key to needlessly break up my post into half a dozen lines.

Hey stranger.
I think everyone is done with school, and at least half of us are married by now. That's how I know it's been a long time; Niff was 12 when I joined.

Time flies, I guess.
I've been out of high school for a while myself now, but I really don't know what I want to do. I feel like I really need to just sit down and decide on what I want to study, but I'm afraid of getting stuck with something I hate or not being able to find any employment after I graduate.
Currently I just finished working with UPS, but that was only a seasonal position so I'm back to looking. Which I'm sure you're all probably all to familiar with.
I seem to remember you, N3B, and Razor were going to school for software engineering of some sort back in the day. I might be imagining things, but that just leads me to ask; what are you all doing these days?
Other then that, the best thing I have going for me is I'm in my third season of coaching youth [K-8] wrestling. It's volunteer and our club is a separate entity from the schools entirely because they can't or won't find money in the budget for us, but we do pretty well on our own and I think it just instills a stronger sense of camaraderie that we're able to come together and make this all happen without any outside help.
As previously mentioned, it is volunteer; but I derive an incredible amount of satisfaction from doing it, so that's OK.
edit: One of my sentences was incomprehensible, just like old times. So much for proof reading.

Ha.
It was Mechanical Engineering, actually, and I graduated back in 2009. I also haven't been able to find work in my field since graduation, so I'm currently baking bagels part time. Sucks, but it beats unemployment.
Waiting is pretty much the worst thing you can do. Waiting to go to higher education reduces your chances of getting acceptance and scholarships at better schools. Waiting to find employment after graduation greatly reduces your chance of managing to find an entry level position. Sometimes you just have to buckle down and make a plan.

What Razor said. The worst thing to do is to wait, because on top of all that, you lose motivation to go back to school rapidly as time goes on. Best to jump in feet first.
As for education, you must be thinking of someone else; I had already graduated from college by the time I signed up here. Turns out I'm actually still working for the same company today that I was then, even. I did finally start a Master's program last summer, though, so I guess I'm not entirely done with school just yet.

It occurs to me that Valentine's Day will mark the 10th birthday/anniversary of this forum. February 14 2003 - February 14 2013. Kind of shocking. I'm a few months shy of being two years out of college with a BA in psychology and still haven't found work in my field. I spent about six months volunteering in psych research labs, just trying to get experience and build my resume, but that never led to anything lucrative. I started blogging in my free time ( The Nocturnal Rambler), hoping perhaps to build a presence on the internet and start making at least some money that way, and now write reviews for an independent online adventure gaming magazine ( Adventure Lantern). Since September I've been working at Busch Gardens, Williamsburg (a theme park) as a musician playing the tuba. I volunteer with two local community bands and there's been recent talk of me being hired part-time to instruct a small youth band for the Salvation Army, and possibly being recommended to play in the Chesapeake Bay Wind Ensemble (a more prestigious, exclusive group). So now everything seems to be pointing towards music, so I'm considering going back to school for a master's degree in music education, or possibly joining a military band to earn a steady salary playing an instrument (there are a lot of caveats and lots of research to be done on both fronts before I pursue anything). I don't have anything profound to say on this front, except to say that I was your age not too long ago and am still in kind of the same boat. As others have said, waiting to go to school won't help your resolve; being in school is a great motivator for figuring things out and it opens various opportunities for you. As long as you go into college with at least a couple of ideas of what you might like to study, you won't get "stuck" with something you hate. Try different things out early, take a mixture of classes, get a sampling of things in your first two years, and go from there. Even if you end up with a degree in something you're not terribly enthused about, having a bachelor's degree is a bare minimum requirement for a lot of jobs -- they might not even care what you majored in, so long as you have a degree.

Hey there merlin. Long time. In case you don't remember me, i'm razor's brother. Wow...has it really been 10 years since we moved here from gamefaqs? Back then I was just a lowly chemistry student. Now I'm a lowly engineer for a major steel manufacturer. I also have 2 beautiful sons with my wife of 6 1/2 years. Plus I'll be turning 30 two months from today. I feel so old. I personally thought about leaving school and going back. I decided not to go back and work on my career. However, the job market sucks right now. If you have the means, I'd continue straight on with my education if I were you. It's getting hard enough to get a good job with a degree, let alone without it. Remember that your never stuck with a field. You can always change course if you feel you need to. Nothing is set in stone. Sent from my MB860 using proboards

Sometimes I marvel at how adult everyone has become over the years. And then someone goes and says something like this: Plus I'll be turning 30 two months from today. I feel so old. And I'm swiftly reminded that I'll always be the old geezer around here. I'll be turning 35 this year. It doesn't get any better once you hit 30, trust me.

Niff was 12 when I joined. I sure was, and am now 22 as of Dec last year. Hi all, this is surely a blast from the past every time I come back.. I even still type n3b.proboards13.com into the browser. I managed to finish high school, moved to the city (as opposed to the tiny town I was in when I was 12..) with my girlfriend of four years and have just been working steadily to support hobbies and overseas holidays. I'm not so much into the tertiary education thing.. I gave academia a go for 6 months but the way my brain works and the way I learn doesn't fit a university setup. I'm not letting schooling get in the way of my education, so to speak. Unfortunately for my future financial prospects, I've taken a shine to playing and recording music with instruments, amplifiers, speaker cabinets and sound capturing equipment from the 1960s-1980s in an effort to bring back real underground local music. It's the kind of music that people would still be making if you ripped out the capitalism and cocaine binges of the 80s from music history. Stoner/doom is apparently the most appropriate label! I just started a DIY home cassette label & live sound capturing "business" that I am positively giddy over called FIND THE OTHERS. It's in the planning stages, but I'm looking forward to its inevitable financial instability in order to distribute awesome music in an ancient physical format with no computers involved! It is very cool to hear everyone's stories. I honestly did not realise today was the 10 year anniversary of this forum - I believe I registered for the original GameFAQs PDBA in January 2003, which would have made me 12 at the time.
