So I saw Sweeney Todd on Friday. It was pretty awesome. The singing of most of the actors was generally mediocre (seems like the main roles were casted for "big name stars" rather than people with good voices, therefore only the lesser characters have particularly good vocals); Depp did a fairly good job singing, however Bonham Carter was pretty dull. Cinematography was awesome, the movie was incredibly and awesomely dark, Depp plays a really good crazy-man.
Perhaps a quarter of the songs were cut out (all of the main chorus narrations and random others), and a lot of the longer ones got shortened. Seemed like a lot of the dark humor moments (in songs) got removed. And the crazed beggar woman wasn't as recurring (she wasn't introduced at the very beginning like she is in the real thing, and a lot of her moments were cut out) wihch makes the ending less dramatic.
But, I'd say it was an excellent "silver screen" adaptation of the musical. Course I did overhear disappointment from ignorant folks who were irked that "tim burton killed johnny depp" and others who didn't realize it was a musical till they got in there (but I think they still enjoyed it).

I refuse to see Sweeny Todd until I get a chance to see Across the Universe. Also, I missed my chance to see Wicked with Idina Menzel, which makes me sad. v_v

I went and sawre it on Saturday and was so happy after waiting all this time to see it. It wasn't nearly as good as I hoped but delightfully bloody like I was hoping. I thought it was alright. I was actually surprised that Alan Rickman didn't do a better job with his character because he seems the type to do well with a theater type of role. Depp was mediocre at best and Bonham was pretty bad too. I did have the sneaking suspicion that they weren't using the beggar as much as they did in the play because they love to use background characters for some middle story and narration sometimes. It wasn't terrible but it wasn't pleasant. Gotta admit though that last scene with Depp looking into the furnace covered in blood was an awesome shot.
