You walk up to the edge of a mine, and listen inside. you can hear the growling and cackling of monsters inside, as well as the "chinking" sounds of miners working for ore.
This could be a good training spot. you think to yourself, looking down into the dark black tunnel.

After about an hour's worth of uneventful foot travel down the mining road, Bismarck was finally starting to notice the telltale signs of the work that was going on nearby. The road was getting wider and more sandy, and empty mining carts stood waiting in lines for when they would be needed. The occasional discarded tool could also be seen lying in the dust or resting against a cart, and the regular, rhythmic clanging of metal on rock, as well as the distinctive noise of a crowd of people, could be heard in the distance.
At last, a large, sandy clearing came into view. At its far end was the entrance to the mine shaft, supported with wooden beams. Nearby, several small wooden buildings were set up, and radiating out from that was a scene of organized chaos. Among the mine carts, some empty, some filled with all manner of raw metals, milled both people and pack animals, and all bustled about tending to their own tasks. The noise of the crowd was much louder in its midst, and mingled with the sounds of mining work emanating from the entrance.
Bismarck headed into the mining camp, and tried to catch the attention of someone who looked like a foreman. He eventually picked someone out who wasn't quite so encrusted in dirt as the rest, and managed to catch his attention long enough to ask him about Carlop. The man pointed towards the mine entrance, and a moment later, had his attention drawn to someone else's concern.
Bismarck shrugged, and headed for the entrance to the mine, to try and track down his employer.

As Bismarck came to the entrance to the mine, he found the short, scruffy Carlop with a mine cart and pick axe. "You ready, lad?" he said, throwing the pick axe to his primary hand.
"Yup, let's get this over with," Bismarck responded.
When they arrived at the site deep in the mine, and Carlop had begun to work on the iron, Bismarck hefted his sword and shield, keeping on the look-out for enemies.

Bismarck saw the glint of the Goblins' eyes from down in the darker tunnels before the creatures emerged into the light, but even still, he was prepared. As the first began to rush towards them, with the others not far behind, he readied his blade, and lunged to attack...

OOC: Just a note that when agility is the same actions happen simultaneously. Should we set defense to carry over to the attack of the next round when agility is lower? Otherwise defense would do nothing in battle since the thing'd get hit before it defends.

I notice the rules for defense have changed either way, and for the better. Half damage is much more realistic than none, and opens the way for a new skill anyway. Speaking of, I have been periodically adding stuff to the armory, skills list, shops, quest boards, etc., without making any announcements. I assume that's not a big deal (since the means of obtaining most of these things are either not in place at all, or well beyond what players can afford). If that's a problem, let me know. As for order of defense, I was working under the assumption that defense was a "superfast" action, and executed immediately at the start of the round, regardless of agility. I think that makes more sense than trying to tie defense to agility; it makes slower characters have an even greater disadvantage than ever if their defensive actions can be preempted by higher agility. "Thanks a lot lad, this here should do the trick; let's head on out!" The two pushed the mine cart back up the steep slope until they reached the broad of daylight. Bismarck's work here was done. He'd have to return to the Guild for his official reward.

Bismarck brushed his hands off after the long trudge to the surface with the mine cart full of ore. He had found it sort of laughable that he had worked up more of a sweat hauling back the cart than fighting the monsters in the mine, but he kept those sentiments to himself. Easy money was the best kind of money, and there was no sense in alienating potential repeat business.
Bismarck turned back to Carlop, who seemed exceptionally pleased at the load he had managed to bring up from the mine. The man grinned widely and said, "This should bring a smile to the foreman's face. He told me I was wasting money when I put out that ad, but look at this haul! It may have cost a bit more to get than usual, but it sure was worth it!"
Bismarck nodded, "It was my pleasure. If you find yourself in need of a bodyguard again, you know who to call."
The two men shook hands and parted ways, and Bismarck began the hike back down the mine road towards the city to collect his pay.

Ranger began trekking into the mine and keeping an eye for any monsters hiding in the shadows.

"Ya look like ya can handle yerself alright, yah?" the miner said, scrutinizing Ranger with squinted eyes. He had a matted grey beard and a mop of hair to match, wore a set of beat up workman's overalls and a dented metal helm complete with a lamp on the front, and was covered in dirt from head to toe.
"I seen yer type around before, comin' in here to beat the beasties that live in the deeper areas, so's I got a properzishin for ya. I want ta scout out some good metal veins in the deeper parts of tha mine. I need somebody ta watch my back. That Carlop thinks he's tha top dog aroun' here evah since he hired out some fancy city-folk to look aftah him when he mines tha deeper vein he foun'. But his hauls are gettin' bigger, and I want ta show him he's not tha only one who can make good money hand over fist!"
"So, whaddya say? Ya want ta help this old geezah out?"

"See that a little bit of XP finds its way into lining my pocket and I will surely protect you to my very best as I dive the mine with you," Ranger said with a sly smile on his face.

"Ohh, yer a sly devil, yes sir!" said the miner with a wink, "I'll tell ya what, tha hauls have been pretty light lately, so I am, eheh, a bit strapped for cash. But ya help me on this, an' ya can have 25% of wha I take in from tha haul. So, ya do a good job an' help me stay down longer, an' ya make more scratch. Whaddya say, we got a deal?"
