You emerge from the western gate of Kestral onto a small dirt path that winds among verdant green meadows. Further to the west, the meadows end somewhat abruptly and a thick forest seems to spring from nowhere. The path can be seen making a sharp left turn at the forest, and then following the edge of the woods to the southern horizon.

Pvt. Schmidt seemed like an amiable fellow, and made small talk with a smile during the walk. However, as he approcahed the bend in the path, he paused and signalled for Ranger to stop.
"Well, we could continue patrolling the path," he said, "But we think the goblins are probably coming from inside the forest. We'll probably have little trouble finding some raiding parties along the road, but if we want to try to find out more about their operation, we will probably have to delve into the forest. Still, it's bound to be more dangerous in there... It's your call."
Schmidt stood with his hand on the hilt of his sword, attentive to the approach of anything with hostile intent, and awaited Ranger's decision.

"If we go through the woods we have to be quiet and attentive of our surroundings we don't want to raise a huge fuss from wherever they are operating. Last thing we need is to be chased back to the walls by an army of goblins. If you have no problems with proceeding slow and careful then i see nothing wrong with it. Let's go," Ranger said with great thought on his face.

"I'll do my best," said Schmidt earnestly. He did, however, tense up visibly around his sword hand, but he prepared to follow Ranger into the woods.[/color]

Ranger walked timidly into the wood keeping a vigilant eye for the goblin scum they were here to slay.
OOC: why no Overlord text?
Because it was omitted.
AKA: I forgot.

The pair entered the forest, each keeping a watchful eye for any goblins. Almost immediately after entering, the light level in the forest grew noticably dimmer as the canopy above their heads thickened. The ground was mostly free of underbrush, but was covered with a layer of dead leaves that crackled as the two trod upon them, which made stealth difficult.
As the two warriors advanced deeper into the growth of the forest, the light continued to dim...

Ranger watches up in the branches and for any sort of clearings as best he can with the dimming light.

Despite all vigilance, Ranger does not spot either a clearing nor anything of interest in the canopy. However, he does find that the canopy eventually stops getting much thicker, and while it doesn't let much light through, it remains enough to see somewhat clearly by.
The pair moves as stealthily as possible among the crunching leaves for several minutes. The air is still within the forest, and it is rather quiet... Almost eerily so. However, no other signs of life seem to be forthcoming.

Ranger turns to the soldier.
"Private," he whispers"Do you know how far from the road we are? I don't know the area to well but maybe you could tell us if we are just a little far from a good point to find the raiding party that keeps attacking."
Ranger comptemplates turning around and following the road in and then going from there deeper in to find the camp.

"I'm not sure what you mean," responded the Private in a hushed whisper, "We've only walked for a few minutes, so I figure we're maybe a quarter-mile from the road at most... And if we knew where the raiders were coming from, we would have sent a force of guardsmen in to wipe them out a long time ago."
"I don't really know what you're getting at, but something seems really suspicious here..."

"Well I am not very knowing of the full situation at hand. I figured maybe they had been toward specific points on the road. If we continue walking near it though I think we will find them. Just wondering if we were still nearby. Let's keep going this spot is giving me the creeps,"
Ranger began walking on again.

Schmidt nodded his agreement, and the two started onward again. However, the deeper the pair moved into the forest, the louder the crackling leaves beneath their feet seemed to become, and the more distant the natural noise one would expect from the woods became. They now moved in an eerie silence, broken only by the sound of their feet on leaves...

Ranger began getting nervous and it was starting to get noticable. He glanced around every now and then looking suspiciously for the enemy that wasn't there.

Abruptly, Schmidt stopped in his tracks.
"S-something's not right here," he whispered, his speech, especially his attempt at choking back fear, rather audible due to the lack of other noises, "No forest is ever like this. It's not natural! Where is all the wildlife? Even the sound of the wind is gone now! And there's no sign of goblins at all! What's going on in this place?"
