Ranger set out with his green skinned travelling companions, towards the Tiskael Mountains in the northwest. The journey was conducted in uncomfortable silence; the shaman's bodyguards kept glancing suspiciously backward, though Ranger could not tell if they were more interested in him or the hulking figure of Gulg behind him. Gulg, for his part, seemed in particularly good spirits; any time Ranger chanced a glance behind him, he only saw Gulg loping along in the rear of the group, wearing that same terrible, vicious grin since they started out. Ranger was now convinced that the orc was simply waiting for any of them to make a false move, and give him an excuse to tear someone apart...
Hours passed as the unlikely group hiked onward through an expanse of plains leading up to the mountains. The sun was high in the sky, and beat down mercilessly on the group, and yet Ranger was still unable to even see the peaks of the mountains in the distance. Everyone save Gulg and the shaman seemed to be starting to wear down in the heat; the shaman, as always, seemed to exude an aura of unflappability (and didn't even seem to be sweating like the rest of them), while Gulg, despite having worked up quite a bit of perspiration, seemed to be just as keen as ever to have the opportunity to kill somone.

Ranger wiped the sweat from his brow he wasn't too pleased with the condition he was in and that he had to go right away after this orc clan. He needed rest, but he knew Gulg would dispatch him if he even gave the faintest sign of weakness.

Ranger takes 5 damage.
The group hiked on through the plains despite their exhaustion. Ranger, for his part, was starting to feel a bit on the woozy side, but he kept the sentiment to himself lest it start unwanted trouble. As they moved on the sun began to dip lower in the sky, glaring a fierce red near the horizon, though this did nothing to abate the intense heat.
Finally, as the sun was preparing to set, the shaman announced, "Enough. We will rest for a time before continuing." Gulg said something in response in orcish (which were the first words he had spoken since they had started the trip), but he was quickly interrupted by a string of the same language from the shaman, and then sat down with no further protest. Instead, however, he removed a heavy iron hatchet from his belt, picked up a nearby rock, and began running it across the blade of the axe, all while keeping an intense eye on Ranger. The goblins, however, seemed too tired to care much, and were simply grateful for an opportunity to be off their feet. However, Ranger noted that the shaman kept his eye more on Gulg than anyone else...

Ranger set down what little he carried on him and took some water from his pack to drink. Not long after he gathered what flora he could from around and had something to eat before laying out a mat to sleep on. He looked at the shaman and the others to see that everything was still within reason.

Ranger barely had time to go much farther than his drink when the distinctive sound of hoofbeats began to rise from somewhere in the distance. The shaman immediately shot to his feet.
"Humans are coming," he said, "And we have nowhere to hide. We must keep moving and hope that they don't see us."
Gulg rose to his feet and responded with more orcish, to which the shaman snapped, "No! We need to conserve our strength for the battle ahead! Now come!"
The rest of the party rose to their feet and set out toward the northwest as the firey orb of the sun began to dip below the horizon. Glancing about, Ranger was certain he could see the silhouettes of men on hoseback approaching from the south...

Ranger wished they hadn't come as much as he enjoyed having his own kind coming he really had needed that time. He was on his way again with them quickly.

The group forged ahead at a brisk pace, but it was no help at all. The horsemen had obviously spotted them in the open plain, and they were gaining on them fast. The shaman halted their forced march, and the greenskins prepared for battle.
"Human," said the shaman, "I hope you are ready to make an important decision about how much value you place on your life and your word. They will be on us shortly."

"I prefer to live and will pursue that as long as I can," Ranger said drawing his bow and getting ready for the charging soldiers.

As the soldiers drew closer, Ranger could see that they were also drawing bows. They wore light armor in the colors of Suryan as well, which indicated that they were part of a light cavalry scouting detail from the city militia.
As they moved into earshot, they fired their first volley as one of them shouted, "Don't worry, traveler, we'll save you! Death to the greenskins!"

It seemed that Ranger's traveling companions were either not understanding or ignoring what he had to say, as they all did whatever they wanted anyway. However, as Ranger loosed his first shot at the mounted archers, he spotted both confused and angry looks from the militiamen...

One of the mounted archers was quickly brought down by the furious assault, and the other, badly wounded and bereft of his ally, quickly wheeled his horse about and galloped off at full steam, but not before casting Ranger a glance that could freeze a blacksmith's forge...

Ranger put away his bow and cast a forlorn look at the fleeing horseman.
"Well our pact is now forged in blood. It is likely I cannot return now. Our might in combat has been proven though. Lets make haste to the orc camp lest that guard brings some friends to search for us," Ranger said to the shaman.

"Indeed," replied the shaman as he fixed his gaze on the retreating back of the scout as he retreated towards the horizon, "We must forge ahead."
The group headed towards the northwest once more, as the sun dipped below the western horizon. The mountains that were their destination were just starting to come into view as night fell.
As they walked, the shaman approached Ranger.
"What you have done today will make you an outcast from your tribe," he said, with noticable sympathy showing through his normally cool exterior, "It would seem, at least from the standpoint of a goblin, that you value your word in the short term, more than your life in the long term. Being exiled from your clan is akin to a death sentence for the majority of goblins; only the truly exceptional can survive on their own. The fact that you have voluntarily chosen that fate is something that we find remarkable."

"I wouldn't have survived if I had chosen to side with them. Gulg would have slaughtered me I had no choice really. I can just hope to gain forgiveness with the watch," Ranger said, "My journey in life has only become harder but not impossible. Besides I would rather be outcast for being true to my word than live my life a liar and a cheat. I was raised in a camp with a code of honor."

"Honor you have, human, and in spades; few goblins would do what you have done," responded the shaman thoughtfully, "However, don't think that this has earned you any trust or respect from Gulg. Orcs think very differently about these matters... And Gulg is still looking for any excuse to bury an axe in your back, to say nothing of mine. Do not lower your guard, or it will very likely be the last mistake you ever make."
"But know this, you have earned the respect of us goblins by your actions, and we place our trust in you."
With that, the shaman moved away to the head of their group once more, leaving Ranger to walk on his own.
