"I don't know, but I really don't like it. This is too weird to be natural. Something more than goblins is going on out here Private," Ranger said with a shaky voice.
Ranger bent down and began to look through the brush for even the normal lifesigns of decay loving bugs. He looked around for any sign of life other than their own.

Ranger sifted through the leaves for any signs of insect life. He was somewhat surprised and relieved to quickly uncover several pillbugs beneath the ground cover, which either curled up or scurried away at his touch. Apparently normal insect life was still present in the forest, though the expected sounds that accompanied them could not be heard.

"What do you think we should do Private?", Ranger said as he attempted to climb one of the trees to see if he could get above the canopy and check where they were or if he could see signs of a bit more civilised life out in the forest(eg: smoke from a fire).

Private Schmidt turned his head to see what Ranger was up to.
"I think you should be careful not to fall," he responded, "I'll keep watch down here."
Ranger scaled the tree, which was somewhat difficult due to the lack of lower hanging branches. After struggling a bit, he finally reached the canopy level, and was able to peer out above the trees. He was able to see miles above the forest level in every direction, but the only evident signs of nearby civilization were from the direction they came, coming from Kestral. In every other direction except west, the forest simply stretched onward until it seemed to just as simply end, as if a gargantuan lumberjack had decided to clear-cut everything that grew after a certain point. Open fields continued from that point to the north and south. However, to the west, the forest continued along as the elevation increased, and eventually thinned out and stopped as the relatively flat land gave way to the increasingly steeper mountains.
Ranger had just spotted a small clearing, just barely evident by a small break in the canopy near the mountainside, when he heard a startled shout from someone below.

Ranger swung wildly down through the limbs he could find and carefully descended the rest of the way to see what was going on below. He noted where the clearing was so they could go there after whatever trouble there was had been dealt with.

Ranger alighted on the ground just in time to see Private Schmidt rush behind a tree trunk. Several arrows whizzed past a moment later as Schmidt panted for breath. Ranger could see he had been grazed on his arm, and blood was trickling down onto the leaf cover below.
"They took me by surprise," said Schmidt, as he tried to regain a bit of composure, "Damned if I know how, but they didn't make a sound as they approached. There are two archers, and one other."
As he finished, another arrow thunked into the tree he was standing behind.

Ranger readied his bow and began looking for the enemy. Working the trajectories he fired toward what he assumed was the first archer.

Leaning out from behind his tree, Ranger quickly spotted both archers preparing to fire another volley of arrows, as well as a goblin armed with a club charging forward. As Ranger nocked his arrow, Schmidt lept from behind his tree with sword drawn, to engage the incoming goblin.
Arrows filled the air...

After carefully drawing a bead on his target, Ranger struck down the final Goblin as it attempted to hide behind a nearby tree. All three corpses bled a sickly green onto the forest cover.
Ranger moved to examine the corpses, and quickly found the talismans that he was informed about in Kestral. Each of the goblins wore a necklace, which was little more than a slightly rusted chain or fraying rope studded with lopped-off ears of nearly every description. It would seem that these were the goblins' battle trophies of choice; each ear was crudely gashed at the point it had been removed, and then had a hole jabbed through at some other random point so that it could be strung onto the necklace. Ranger could identify several of the less mangled specimens: human, elven, dwarven, and even the ears of other goblins were strung across the various necklaces in varying quantity.

"That was fun," Ranger said with a smile on his face, "I saw a clearing while I was up there it's this way," Ranger pointed to where he had seen it. Let's get going before anymore goblins come down on us from nowhere.
