"Those goblins were weak," said Schmidt, as he rubbed his wounded arm. The blood had scabbed over the site already, "There are otehrs, though, that are tougher and will put up more of a fight. Just be careful, we can't afford to be ambushed again."
With that, Schmidt prepared to follow Ranger's lead toward the clearing.

It was nearly 20 minutes later that Ranger was beginning to see how the height of his observation had distorted its distance. The two men continued to hike through the noiseless forest, but seemed no closer to their destination than when they started. In fact, it was nearly impossible to tell where they were at all, since every part of the forest looked the same...

"Agh I hate bloody desceptive distances," Ranger said aside to Schmidt, "I am beginning to think this whole going around to look for them was a bad idea. If we had gone on the road we probably would have already killed the bastards. All for the greater good right," Ranger sighed. He looked at Schmidt, lowered and shook his head.
"I'm sorry I dragged us out here. Please keep watch while I go up again and find out where the hell we are," Ranger said as he began to grip hold of the nearby tree.

Schmidt nodded in reply, and Ranger scrambled up the nearest tree to achieve his vantage point.
As Ranger's head crested the canopy once more, he was disheartened to learn that they seemed to be no closer to the clearing than they were before. In fact, it almost seemed as if they hadn't moved at all...

Ranger climbed down again and greeted schmidt on the ground.
"I think that we are walking in circles. I think you or I should start marking the trees so that we know if we walk in circles..." He said while pulling out a small knife.

"Sounds reasonable to me," said Schmidt, "You've got the knife, so go right ahead."

As they continued along every now and then he would mark a tree with a basic arrow pointing the direction they had gone so that should they circle around they could change the path the follow a little to stay on target. He also began checking for the moss to tell which direction they were headed.

The pair continued through the forest, with Ranger periodically marking trees as he went. From what he could tell by the moss on the trees, they were indeed headed in a relatively straight line, in what he assumed was a westerly direction.
Ten minutes later, Ranger spotted the first marked tree as they approached it.

"I concur," grumbled Schmidt, as he glared at the marking on the tree, "What do we do now? And what do you think is causing us to keep coming back to this spot?"

"No idea, but I suspect that its not natural, much like this whole damn forest." Ranger said with a sideways glance at the markings.

"It's always been rumored that the goblins have a cadre of shamans hiding in this forest, and now I'm starting to believe it. There must be some powerful enchantments on this forest for it to behave this way."

"Any ideas how to get through this damn thing without getting affected by the enchantment. There has got to be a way to break it," Ranger said with a bit of hope creeping in.

"Um," responded Schmidt, "Somehow I don't think dispel magic runes are in the Watches' budget. I just stick the pointy end of this sword into things that deserve it, I don't dabble in that sort of thing. So unless you've got an idea, I think we're stuck."
