You stand before the Fields of Blood, the site of a fierce battle many years ago. At that time, the armies of Suryan, Kestral, and Lesko had allied themselves against the western kingdom of Scaranth, after the armies of Scaranth begun encroaching on their lands. At first, the central kingdoms did not fare well against this threat, as Suryan and Kestral each tried to repel the invaders alone, while Lesko refused to get involved. The central kingdoms took heavy losses from the invading troops, who were both greater in number and better organized. However, the fortunes of war turned at the Fields of Blood.
Representatives of the three lands met in haste after the forces of Scaranth forced the defenders of Suryan and Kestral to retreat nearly to their city gates. A hasty alliance was made to drive the westerners out, and a plan formulated to rout their army. This plan took shape on the Fields of Blood, and turned the tides of the war.
The army of Kestral marched forth to do battle from the south, and appeared to be operating alone. The generals of the Scaranthian army, seeing an opportunity to wipe out Kestral's forces and conquer the city, marched forth to meet them. However, this move was a well orchestrated ruse, to cover the movements of Suryan's army, which manuvered around to the north of the Fields. They struck without warning at the enemy's exposed back, destroying their supply lines and cutting off their retreat. The armies of Suryan and Kestral then begn a pincer attack on the Fields, but they remained outnumbered, and it seemed like they still would not be able to win the day. However, the timely arrival of the Warrior-Monks and Battlemages of Lesko tipped the scales in the favor of the central kingdoms.
The battle raged on until the forces of Scaranth present on the Fields had been cut down to the last man. Though exhausted from the effort, the three armies of the central kingdoms nonetheless pursuedthe remaining forces of Scaranth, who were little more than reservists and support. They were routed easily, and the three kingdoms pushed them back past the old borders and into Scaranthian territory, though their armies could not hope to push much further. Peace accords were rapidly drawn up and signed, and hostilities came to an end. Scaranth was forced to relinquish all of the land that the central kingdoms had conquered, as well as cease all aggression immediately. Relations between Scaranth and the central kingdoms remain cool to this day.
However, the Fields of Blood still remian. The ferocity of the battle left them a torn-up, ruined wasteland where nothing could grow. To this day, the land remains pocked with craters from the siege weapons, scorched by magical energies, and tinged red by an ever-present stain of old blood. Roads have been diverted around the place, as many of the dead are restless here, and rise into undeath of their own volition or with the occasional aid of a power-hungry necromancer.
