So my brother bought the new GOW red PSPSlim and handed me his old black PSP. This has been an epic victory for me -- I was considering buying one and I get a used one for free.
It seems to have a more mature selection of games than the DS does (feels like the novelty of the DS has started to wear off and most of the games coming out are shovelware marketed for younger people).
Currently I only have: God of War: Chains of Olympus, Monster Hunter Freedom 2, Silent Hill: Origins, Brave Story, Castlevania, Me and My Katamari, and GTA: Liberty City Stories (most of which are Matt's; he has more but I'm not particularly interested in em).
However, what interests me more is the potential for the custom firmware to run emulators. 'Twould be sweet to replay some of my favorite SNES/PS1/64 games on that little thing. Not to mention it gives access to virtually the entire gaming industry prior to sixth generation consoles.
I've ordered a $10 Pandora Battery from DealExtreme in order to put it into service mode to downgrade and install new firmware, along with a 4 GB pro duo memory stick to put the olde games on.

I still can't justify the purchase of one of these to myself; about half of the games I would actually be interested in playing are already on that list of yours (Castlevania, Katamari), and most of the others I would have been interested in trying seem to pop up as PS2 ports after a short time.
I can't imagine why you have such a dim outlook on the DS. Lots of great games are out or on the horizon, including a new Castlevania title and FF Tactics Advance. As for emulation, there's apparently a pretty active DS scene for that, too. Granted, there is a lot of weird young kid / "productivity" shovelware for the thing too, but every console has it's own flavor of bad that shows up; you can't tell me there isn't "crap games for the teen / preteen set" shovelware popping up constantly for the PSP (or any other Sony console, for that matter).

No luck with hacking my PSP yet. Spent a lot of time reading information and tutorials, but I feel like I'm going in circles. Soon, though, I'm going to buckle down and get to work on this.
