life to the general board! LIFE!
right. k. building a non-gaming computer with capability to become a gaming computer when i get spare cash.
needs: - motherboard with onboard graphics, firewire, USB 2.0, and a PCI-E 16x slot - decent processor. was thinking a new 64 bit dual core AMD 5800+ but i really have no idea if there's better options out there. - 2GB of RAM. no clue what type. no idea what a DDR is, or what's best. - at least 320GB of storage - audio card, no clue what brand or kind, for higher quality audio. recording will be done with firewire or USB 2.0 preamp(s) to eliminate hum and latency, so it doesn't need XLR or 1/4" inputs - CD and DVD burner
using it for these purposes: - general internet use and piracy - movies. lots, of movies. - music. lossless. lots of. etc. - recording instruments and mixing my own music.
and if anybody's interested, i'll be using amplitube 2, ampegSVX, and pro tools for recording and mixing, all instruments recorded direct and clean through 1/4" into the preamp until i can set up a full recording rig with actual amplifiers microphoned up. which is hard, and probably won't happen for a long time.
anybody got any advice on the brands i should look at? like for the hard drive, CD/DVD burner and motherboard. is intel better this generation for processors, especially dual cores? or is it still ok to stick with AMD? or any other general advice, like if there's going to be major price drops soon, stuff like that. i'm pretty lost when it comes to computing these days.

You just reminded me how much my current recording setup sucks.
*sad face*
You would not believe the amount of work I put into making my live samples not sound like crap . . . friggin radioshack mic.

ouch. yeah i'm getting a good mic setup for recording one day. as in an MD421 for bass + DI blend, SM57 + some other mic blend for guitar and a SM58 for vocals. that is, if i ever get serious about it. otherwise direct recording is fine.
