We could go RS style, Attack - determines which weapon you can wield and chance of hit
Strength - determines power and damage of hit
Defense - Determines how much damage you would take and what armor you can wear
Magic - Determines which black spell you can use and damage of spell/determines which white spell you can use and how much it heals
Then add in stuff like
Dexterity - Speed of attack and determines what kind of bow/throwing knife/shuriken/ranged weapon you can use
Vitality - increases max HP and how long you can stay underwater
_________
Or just plain old
Strength - determines how much damage you would take, what armor you can wear, what weapons you can wield, and how much damage you do
Magic - what black magic you can use and how much damage it does/what white magic you can use and how much it heals
Dexterity - speed of attack, and determines which kind of range weapon you can use, and just plain old speed
Vitality - increases hp and determines how long you can stay underwater

I thought HP were increased only by questing and spending XP to upgrade? This would make Vitality unnecessary.
The "staying underwater" thing brings something else to mind... I'll make a new topic about that.
As for stats, I think we only really need 5: STR: Weapon damage, what you can wield/wear, other tasks (pushing/pulling/lifting heavy objects, etc.) DEX: Ranged weapon damage, speed, whether you can wield certain weapons (those requiring finesse rather than raw power), other tasks (sneaking past a guard unnoticed, etc.) INT: Magic damage, which spells you can learn, other tasks (comprehension of unfamiliar or unusual things, etc.) DEF: Damage reduction from enemy attacks, general measure of toughness HP: How much abuse you can take before you die

I think DEF is an "artificial" stat only, meaning that everyone has a natural defense of zero. Bonuses to DEF are only available through armor and spells. Though we could make a "tough skin" ability, or something like that, as a job skill... Hmm...

Not having played RS, I have no idea. But it sounds like you're probably right, if Prayer raises DEF.

prayer is a skill used to increase attack, defense, and strength for certain periods of time. your amount of prayer is simmilar to magic, starts as xx/xx, and then as it's used decreases until it reaches zero.
at which point, your stat alterings return to normal. so, prayer is simmilar to what we're thinking of using, except the armor/weapon defense is more permanent.
