Hello p//N.
I recently picked up an Xbox 360 controller so I could play my N64/PS ROMs with an analog stick (most of them are impossible without it). Of course, one of the first games I tried it with was Perfect Dark. What a shocker mang.
I completely forgot how great it was. I had assumed that over the years new technology would render PD an obsolete, doddering sort of grandfather-of-modern-FPS, with outdated graphics, boring weaponry/levels, and a predictable storyline. Even knowing the exact outcome of everything ahead of time, the game is still flawless.
It's taking me a while to get back up to my old skills, especially since the 360 analog stick is like 300% more sensitive, but yeah. Thought I'd share.
Also, aloha, how's everyone doing? Who's still active? I see Clash is going strong . . .

Dr. Notek Soofor, I presume.
You should stick around, join Clash, and maybe we can make something of this board again. I just got done with yet another periodic rereading of the archives (ending with our Greatest Story Ever Told, of course: go read the CISOD again if you haven't in a while). I miss the old, active days, when we had a dozen different members posting within a couple of days. Even with Clash active again, it's just mainly the 4-6 of us.
If we got a couple of the old guard back, and seriously dedicated ourselves to it, we could make this place great again. I know nobody has the kind of time to kill like they did 6 years ago, but if we make it a point to keep active here, I know it can be done.
Who's with me?! ;D
On topic, yes, PD is still the greatest FPS ever (at least as far as I'm concerned). The Timesplitters games were worthwhile follow-ups, but nothing beats the genuine article. Even today, I play new FPS games on occasion, and find myself wondering "Why isn't this as good as PD? It's been almost 10 years." But it seems that nobody wants to put in that kind of effort anymore. Or maybe I'm just jaded at the FPS genre in general, where all you need to have a blockbuster is online play nowadays.

DraxasIt's funny that you should mention Timesplitters, as TS2 was the only FPS I've played (and _enjoyed_) since PD. Still, it didn't quite expand to the point that it could have, and that's why I found TS3 so disappointing. Half Life was decent, unfortunately HL2 failed to captivate me even slightly. It's amazing to me how many people refer to Halo as being incredibly innovative and expansive in terms of weaponry, scenarios, enemies, etc; yet, every time I play it I think back to PD gems like the Farsight, RCP120, etc. Frankly, in-game simulants/bots/whatever should be a staple of any FPS, ditto for a decent AI. I am trying to keep myself from ranting on every single facet of PD, but you know how it is. It seems to me that the FPS is a dying breed. The straight-up FPS should optimally combine strategy, action, environment, and creativity in terms of weaponry/levels/enemies/etc, but it seems to me that most only bother to hit one or two. Halo and it's clones have action, but are essentially soulless. Plus, Master Chief is almost as corny as "Perfect Dark" as far as nicknames are concerned. HL2, Bioshock, Left 4 Dead and the like all seem focused on environment in excess, to the point where even the encounters feel obligatory and dull. Don't even get me started on weaponry - as far as I'm concerned, PD has greater variety, balance, and therefore potential for strategy than any FPS I've played since, and this is inexcusable. </rant> As far as posting is concerned . . . I'm going to try again; at least, I'm going to try to get back in the habit of checking the board pretty often. Writing for me as been an uphill struggle, ultimately resulting in shoddy workmanship, and thus a lack of motivation for me to continue. RazorYes indeed. ^_^

I'm disappointed to agree with you about FPSes in general. Back in the day, these games used to captivate me, but I guess PD ruined me forever. The TS games were the best of what followed, but they didn't quite stack up to PD even if they were a lot of fun to play. Everything else was just a disappointment. EA mangled the later Bond games, to the point where they stopped trying to duplicate (and ride the coattails of) Goldeneye's success, and started turning them into 3rd person action games (which also weren't that great). Halo held no appeal for me, since I had no interest in playing online (and never had a X-Box at all, but hey), and the single player mode was really shallow (and the lack of bots inexcusable). Most everything else I simply skipped, either due to lack of PC power or lack of interest. All things being considered, I don't think I'm missing much. As far as Master Chief's name goes, well... It's actually a real rank in the Navy. The more you know, I guess. Still lends the guy a dull, faceless sort of feel, which is pretty much what I thought of the rest of the game anyway: Lacks variety. You can only shoot baddies for so long with nothing else to do before it starts to grate on you. I personally had my fill of that back with Doom 2, Quake, and Duke Nukem 3D. Please stick around. I suspect that you're only unsatisfied with your writing because you're rusty; give it some time, and you'll get back into the swing of things soon enough.

STALKER is a good modern FPS. If your PC can handle it.
Condemned isn't really an FPS but it's worth playing.
