Ranger found himself in a small room, devoid of features. The only item of note was an archway leading onward off to his right, into the darkness. Otherwise, it was simply crumbling, mossy bricks all around.

Ranger made his way through the archway.

A long, darkened hallway that stretched onward through the castle walls ahead of Ranger. At least for the distance ahead that Ranger could see, several wooden doors were set into the left side of the hall. A quick examination showed that they were starting to grow lichen, but otherwise relatively intact and seemingly well used.
The corridor was rather chilly, and Ranger couldn't shake the feeling that he was being watched...

Ranger looked for something he could use as a makeshift torch.

Glancing about, Ranger spotted several long shards of rotting wood littering the hallway that could serve as crude torches... Provided he had a means to start a fire, which was simply not the case.
As he stood from examining the debris, he heard the sound of voices coming from somewhere nearby, and approaching closer...

Ranger grabbed one of the rotted wood shards anyway and with as much force as he could muster threw it down the center of the hall.

The shard of wood clattered down the hallway and splintered apart on impact, creating a surprising amount of noise for its size, probably because the sound echoed through the hall. The disturbance attracted some attention, as Ranger distinctly could hear the voices pause, and then footfalls could be heard hurrying down the hallway, presumably to investigate the source of the ruckus.

Ranger dodged into the nearest door he could as quietly as he could and listened.

Apparently quiet was not high on the list of priorities in this particular dilapidated ruin, because the first door on the left wall had rusted hinges that screeched horribly as Ranger had little choice but to apply a great deal of muscle to force it open. As he darted ino the room and pushed the door closed behind him, he had no doubt that he had been heard; seemed like he picked the wrong door this time, and now he was going to have to deal with whatever had heard him.
In his moment of respite until then, he examined the room he had entered. It seemed to have been some sort of guard's station once, but time and lack of maintenance had not been kind to it. The wreckage of a largish wooden table lay crumbled in the middle of the room, as it had rotted, been colonized by moss and fungus, and then simply fallen apart sometime long ago. Other than that, the only feature of note was a pile of rubble caved in at the other end of the room. It seemed as if there was once an exit behind it, as the rubble was piled up behind a relatively intact doorframe, but there was little chance that it could be accessed now.
As Ranger listened at the door, he could hear muffled footsteps behind it, moving at an accelerated pace and drawing still closer...

Ranger backed away from the door nocking an arrow ready to shoot as soon as the door opened.

Ranger didn't have long to wait. Moments after setting himself up for his shot, the door screeched open once again. Ranger let fly with his arrow, which streaked through the open doorway and clattered against the bricks in the hall; there was nobody there. And then several small, furry creatures rushed in, screaming battlecries and brandishing small quarterstaves. Apparently, these guards were not quite as stupid as Ranger had thought...

I would like to make it known that the entire last post was typed sideways and upsidedown because my keyboard holder broke and that was simply the way the keyboard was at the time.
